Althea Woodland is nestled outside the woods of the Northwest Branch Anacostia River, a 21.5m free-flowing stream in the county. The facility is parallel to the Anacostia Tributary Trail System and a section of the Northwest Branch Trail runs adjacent to the main building.
The woods are protected as parkland by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) and the planned Rachel Carson Greenway will extend the Northwest Branch Trail into northern Montgomery County.
An aerial image helps encapsulate the magnitude of the wooded area behind the facility.
